Yakut Khomus Playing: From Tradition to Contemporary Practice

In this interactive workshop, participants will be introduced to the Yakut khomus and other types of this ancient instrument, known for its rich sonic palette and deep cultural significance across different cultures.
During the session, participants will learn how to hold the instrument correctly, produce their first sounds, and work with breath and resonance. They will also explore simple rhythmic and sound techniques. The workshop will conclude with a demonstration of how this traditional instrument can be used to create compositions, including in contemporary genres such as techno.
Participants are kindly asked to bring their own instrument (khomus, shankobyz, or jaw harp; excluding the Vietnamese type).
Aldana Duoraan is a khomus performer from the Sakha Republic (Yakutia), currently based in Prague. Her practice is rooted in traditional Sakha music and combines various types of mouth harps and voice to create meditative soundscapes.
