Archiving the Architectural Landscape

Workshop
18.10.2018

Students, architects, researchers, emerging local historians, and anyone interested in exploring architecture and the urban environment — you’re welcomed! Tomorrow, from 11:00 to 17:00, the first workshop in the “Archiving the Architectural Landscape” series by ArchCode Almaty will take place. Topic: “Historic Inventory of the Architectural Landscape”

Here’s what we’ll cover:

  1. What kind of architectural landscape surrounds us in Almaty today, and what is it made of?
  2. What do different architectural elements mean—symbols on signage, building features—and what messages do they convey?
  3. Why and how should we map the architectural landscape of the city, and how can we interpret those maps?

Here’s what we’ll do:

  1. Study and reconstruct the timeline of a specific location in the city using a variety of media.
  2. Each participant will create their own personal timeline of the area around the Tselinny cinema and compare it with others to identify overlaps.
  3. Practice the concept of “individual interpretations of a place’s memory” and explore the intersections of these timelines—so-called collective “memory points” of the site.
