Archiving the Architectural Landscape
Workshop
18.10.2018
Students, architects, researchers, emerging local historians, and anyone interested in exploring architecture and the urban environment — you’re welcomed! Tomorrow, from 11:00 to 17:00, the first workshop in the “Archiving the Architectural Landscape” series by ArchCode Almaty will take place. Topic: “Historic Inventory of the Architectural Landscape”
Here’s what we’ll cover:
- What kind of architectural landscape surrounds us in Almaty today, and what is it made of?
- What do different architectural elements mean—symbols on signage, building features—and what messages do they convey?
- Why and how should we map the architectural landscape of the city, and how can we interpret those maps?
Here’s what we’ll do:
- Study and reconstruct the timeline of a specific location in the city using a variety of media.
- Each participant will create their own personal timeline of the area around the Tselinny cinema and compare it with others to identify overlaps.
- Practice the concept of “individual interpretations of a place’s memory” and explore the intersections of these timelines—so-called collective “memory points” of the site.
