Art Walks and Sound Art Creation

Almaty can not only be seen — it can be heard. In this course, we will turn the city into an open workshop, where street rhythms, fragments of conversations, the hum of traffic, and courtyard rustles become our material. Participants will make field recordings, work with the acoustics of different spaces, and explore the rhythms of urban life and architecture.
From the collected sounds, participants will create audio collages and sound objects. In parallel, visual research — sketches, maps, and found objects — will help to complement the sonic portrait of the city. The result will be a collaborative sound art album in which the city speaks through the voices of teenagers.
The course requires no prior experience or special knowledge — all that’s needed is attentiveness, curiosity, and a willingness to listen to the city and one’s own ideas.
Course outcome: a collaborative sound art album made from the collected sounds of the city.
Location: Atelier of the Center for Contemporary Culture Tselinny, 59 Masanchi St., Almaty. Classes take place in the studio and include city walks.
