Emotional Landscape

This public artist talk explores how artists create spaces that shape the way we experience and remember art. It looks at how the way an artwork is presented — its setting, layout, and atmosphere — can influence how we understand it, often connecting to our own memories and personal experiences. The studio works across art, design, and research to develop what they call “emotional landscapes” — environments designed not just to be seen, but to be felt. In this talk, they will share how they approach creating spaces that stay with us long after we leave them.

Memories play a key role in this process: something you saw as a child, read in a book, heard in a club, or watched in a film can become a starting point for designing a space. Confusion, disorientation, control, love, ambiguity, climax, and desperation are narratives that you will encounter in one of the studio’s projects, as they work to expand the range of emotions that can be experienced through space. Whether designing an installation for a single video or a large exhibition with dozens of artists, the starting point remains the same: what do we want people to feel, and what will they remember afterwards?

About the studio:

D_P_S is a research-based design studio founded in 2016 by Diogo Passarinho. The studio explores how emotional experiences shape the way we remember spaces. Their work has been presented internationally, including at the Venice Biennale, Gwangju Biennale, Sharjah Biennale, Helsinki Biennale, Baltic Triennial, and institutions such as Hayward Gallery, Palais de Tokyo, Pirelli HangarBicocca, Oslo National Museum, and Van Abbemuseum. Their practice spans architecture, exhibition design, furniture design, research, and curatorial and writing projects.
