History of Concrete

The feature-length debut from the creator of the popular HBO comedy-documentary series *How to with John Wilson*. After attending a workshop on how to write screenplays and pitch films to Hallmark, a network known for its formulaic rom-coms, director John Wilson tries to pitch a documentary about the history of an essential element of urban life: concrete. Or is the film actually about something else?
It’s hard to imagine how a film on such a topic could be funny and engaging—but thanks to Wilson’s signature ability to turn the flow of his own thoughts into a thrilling cinematic journey, he pulls it off. The director leads the viewer down a “rabbit hole” of facts—from Ancient Rome to technologies for removing gum from sidewalks—observing everyday urban life and absurd coincidences, while simultaneously prompting philosophical reflection on the value of creativity outside the industry’s approval.
“The History of Concrete” is one of the most talked-about documentaries at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival.
