Introduction to Graphic Design

12.04.2026–17.05.2026
Lecture, Workshop
Tselinny

This course is a practical introduction to graphic design for those who want to explore the field and understand how it works. Over six sessions, participants will learn the fundamental principles of design — including composition, grids, typography, and working with type — and apply them through hands-on exercises.

Each session combines a short theoretical introduction with a mini workshop, allowing participants to immediately put new knowledge into practice. No prior experience is required — there is no need to know how to draw or have a background in design. Curiosity and a willingness to experiment are enough.

At the end of each session, participants will create a postcard that serves both as a visual summary of the lecture and as a design exercise. By the end of the course, participants will not only gain a foundation in graphic design, but also a clearer understanding of how to continue learning, develop their own style, and navigate the field professionally.

Who is it for:

Participants aged 16 and above — including high school students building a portfolio, as well as adults considering a career change or exploring design as a new field.

Course instructor: Zhanar Bereketova — artist and design educator. She holds a BA in Graphic Design from the University of Hertfordshire (UK). She has taught at the British Higher School of Art & Design in Moscow and at De Montfort University in Almaty. She leads independent courses in art and design and teaches layout design in Adobe InDesign. Since 2017, she has been engaged in contemporary art practice. Currently an MA student at UAL (London College of Communication).

Participation fee:

Full course (6 sessions) – 45,000 KZT

Single session – 8,000 KZT

Session 1 | April 12 | What is Graphic Design?

An introduction to the field: what distinguishes design from other disciplines, whether “talent” is necessary, and whether drawing skills are required. Participants will create a postcard to explore their own entry point into design.

Session 2 | April 19 | How Does Composition Work?

An overview of seven key principles of composition and how they apply not only to design but also to everyday visual perception. Includes analysis of examples and exercises with abstract forms.

Session 3 | April 26 | What Are Grid Systems?

An introduction to grids and their role in structuring visual information. Participants will create their own poster using a grid system.

Session 4 | May 3 | What is Typography and How Does It Work?

An exploration of layout and typography — why it matters and how it remains flexible despite its rules. Includes an experimental exercise focused on typographic hierarchy.

Session 5 | May 10 | How Are Letterforms Built and How to Choose Typefaces?

A closer look at the structure of letterforms and the principles of selecting typefaces. Participants will work with type as a visual language and expressive tool.

Session 6 | May 17 | How to Start Learning Design from Your Own Context?

An overview of different learning paths — self-education, universities, online courses, and practice. Participants will develop a personal strategy for continuing in design.
