We invite you to a lecture by Silvio Oksman, “Modern Heritage in Brazil: From Recognition to the Present Day.”

Since the 1930s, modern architecture in Brazil has been recognised as cultural heritage through public policies. Almost a century of this work offers an opportunity to consider which questions surrounding the preservation of modern buildings remain relevant today and what new perspectives have emerged over time.

Silvio Oksman will discuss the Brazilian experience and how ideas about the value of modern architecture, approaches to its preservation, and the treatment of already recognised heritage sites have changed.

Silvio Oksman is an architect and urban planner with a PhD and postdoctoral degree from the University of São Paulo (USP) and a partner at Metrópole Arquitetos. Over the past 20 years, he has developed restoration projects and conservation plans for modern buildings. He participated in the Keeping It Modern initiative with the project Subsidies for a Conservation Management Plan: Vilanova Artigas Building and coordinated the MASP Structure Conservation Plan. He is also Vice-President of ICOMOS’s Scientific Committee for the Preservation of 20th Century Heritage and has participated in the evaluation of proposed World Heritage nominations.

The lecture will take place on August 16 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm at 59 Masanchi Street, Tselinny, Atelier educational space on the second floor of the center. Free admission with registration. The lecture will be held in English.
