We invite you to a lecture by Maurizio Meriggi, “Moisei Ginzburg: Composer of Architectural Form”.

Almaty’s First Government House will be considered as a monument of its time through two key categories of the architectural avant-garde: art as composition and art as construction. The building is both a manifesto of Constructivist ideology and an example of accomplished architectural composition.

The lecture will look at the Government House as a social condenser, its relationship to Constructivist ideology, and the architectural language of Moisei Ginzburg. Particular attention will be given to contemporary Orientalism in the building’s architecture, the influence of local climate and natural conditions, the picturesque quality of its composition, and the role of colour in shaping the perception of the building.

Maurizio Meriggi is an architect, researcher, and professor of architectural design at the Politecnico di Milano. He specialises in the history and theory of twentieth-century architecture, the architectural avant-garde, and urban planning. He is one of the leading researchers of Russian Constructivism and the author of numerous works on Konstantin Melnikov, Ivan Leonidov, Moisei Ginzburg, and Soviet architecture of the 1920s and 1930s. He has led international research projects, exhibitions, and publications dedicated to architectural heritage. His research also includes contemporary urbanism in China and the theory of architectural composition.

The lecture will take place on August 15 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm at 59 Masanchi Street, Tselinny, Atelier educational space on the second floor of the center. Free admission with registration. The lecture will be held in Russian.
