Losing Innocence in Alma-Ata

An anthology film consisting of 13 short stories about young and not-so-young characters seeking love and intimacy in an urban setting. Almaty residents meet in all sorts of places around the city: in university classes, at work, at a club, or through their parents. They all long to build relationships, but not everyone gets what they want.
The film focuses on the first sexual experiences of city dwellers of different ages and social backgrounds, creating a multifaceted portrait of intimacy in the early 2010s.
Filmed during that period, the film is now seen as a snapshot of a specific urban moment—with a different rhythm of everyday life and different ways of meeting people before the mass shift to dating apps and social media.
Today, Zhanna Isabayeva’s work comes across as a truly free expression of urban relationships and as a time capsule of everyday life in Almaty in the early 2010s.
