Curatorial note:

In her first documentary film, Sofia Coppola does not set out to create a comprehensive portrait of Marc Jacobs. The very title, *Marc by Sofia*, underscores the subjectivity of her perspective: what we see is Marc and the world around him, as seen and captured by Sofia. Their long-standing friendship serves as the film’s starting point and largely shapes its perspective.

Through this personal portrait, the film gradually moves beyond the confines of a single biography and evolves into a portrait of several decades of fashion and visual culture. Archival footage is interwoven with films, music, art, and Jacobs’s other sources of inspiration, showing how images created by others become part of his own creative language. And then the images he created continue this chain, becoming references for others. *Marc by Sofia* turns out to be a film not only about the work of a single designer, but also about how culture is constantly created from what we once saw, heard, and loved.

Synopsis:

Over the course of twelve weeks, Sofia Coppola observes her longtime friend and designer Marc Jacobs as he prepares his Spring 2024 collection. Through this creative process, the story of one of America’s most influential designers gradually unfolds: his journey from studying at Parsons and creating the famous grunge collection for Perry Ellis to launching his own brand and working at Louis Vuitton. By weaving together footage of the runway show preparations, personal conversations, archival material, and the films, music, and art that influenced Jacobs, Coppola creates a portrait of her longtime friend and his creative world.
