“How Is an Ethnography of Space Possible?”
For anthropologists, the main imperative is “being there” — direct, long-term presence in the field. Fewer than 600 humans have ever been beyond Earth, and none of them were anthropologists. Social scientists are not sent to space. So what do space anthropologists study, and how? What possibilities do they have for conducting ethnography? What methods and perspectives can be used to study outer space?
