Secret of silent screaming

12.05.2026-13.05.2026
Workshop
Tselinny

This workshop explores the expressive and physical possibilities of the human voice, with a focus on extended vocal techniques and throat singing.

Led by Sainkho Namtchylak, the workshop introduces participants to breathing, resonance, and vocal control as tools for expanding the range and depth of the voice. Particular attention is given to overtone singing and techniques that allow the voice to produce multiple sound layers simultaneously.

The program combines foundational breathing practices with experimental vocal exercises, encouraging participants to develop awareness of their vocal body and explore new modes of expression. It also draws on Central Asian vocal traditions, approaching voice as both a physical and meditative practice.

The workshop includes both theoretical and practical components. Participants will be introduced to different styles of overtone singing (including sygyt, khoomei, and kargyraa), as well as the historical and cultural contexts of these practices. The practical sessions focus on developing vocal techniques, working with breath and resonance, and exploring sound through movement and improvisation.

Across the sessions, participants will work individually and collectively, with the possibility of a final group performance.

The workshop is open to singers, performers, and anyone interested in working with voice — no prior experience required. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing suitable for movement and bring water.

Sainkho Namtchylak — a vocalist and performer whose practice spans traditional Tuvan music, performance art, experimental sound, and improvisation. Rooted in khoomei (overtone singing), her work brings together elements of shamanic traditions, Siberian folklore, and Buddhist ritual with contemporary sonic practices.
