Lecture

We invite you to a walk through Constructivist Almaty, opening the public programme A Return to Form: Architectural Weekend.

In the late 1920s, after the capital of the Kazakh SSR was moved to Alma-Ata, the city began to change rapidly. New residential complexes, administrative buildings, and public spaces appeared, while Constructivism became an architectural language of a new urban life.

During the walk, participants will see residential complexes from the 1930s, the TurkSib Administration Building, the First Government House, the Central Post Office, the former NKVD Club, and other buildings. The route will trace the changing architecture of Almaty and explore what remains today of the architects’ original ideas.

The tour will be led by A Return to Form curators Zhanna Spooner and Aiya Duiseyeva.

Zhanna Spooner is an architect, curator of the exhibition A Return to Form, and a member of ICOMOS Kazakhstan.
Aiya Duiseyeva is an architect, curator of the exhibition A Return to Form, and a member of ICOMOS EPWG Kazakhstan.

The tour will take place on August 15 from 10:00 to 11:00 am in Russian. Meeting point: Residential Complex No. 1, 81 Kabanbay Batyr Street, at the intersection with Furmanov Street. The route will end at Tselinny, 59 Masanchi Street.
