A zine is an independent, often small-circulation printed publication that gives anyone the freedom of self-expression and authorship. Zines can vary greatly in form and content: from deeply personal or niche topics to formats ranging from pocket-sized DIY booklets, artist’s zines, and A4 notebooks to carefully typeset zine-newspapers, photo books, and other formats.

In this two-day workshop, we will get acquainted with the history and examples of zines, try out a few quick exercises, and then each participant will create their own zine in any technique — with drawings, photographs, texts, collages, or a mix of them. We will work with themes and interests that matter personally to participants, helping each to assemble a zine that reflects their identity in some way.
At the end, participants will exchange zines and discuss the works, and if they wish, digitize them for a shared archive. All necessary materials will be provided, though participants are welcome to bring their own to expand visual possibilities.
